01

RGB vs CMYK โ€” What's the Difference?

When designing on screen, use RGB mode. But for flex printing and offset printing, CMYK mode is essential. If you save a design in RGB and send it to the printer, the colors will shift. Always convert before printing โ€” go to Image โ†’ Mode โ†’ CMYK Color in Photoshop.

02

Flex Banner DPI โ€” What Resolution is Correct?

For large flex banners, 72โ€“150 DPI is enough since they are viewed from a distance. For visiting cards and invitation cards, 300 DPI is required. Higher DPI means heavier file size. For a 4ร—3 feet flex, design at 150 DPI โ€” this keeps the file manageable without compromising print quality.

03

Use Smart Objects

When placing photos in a PSD file, always place them as Smart Objects (File โ†’ Place Embedded). You can resize a Smart Object as many times as you want without losing quality. When swapping a customer photo, just double-click to replace it โ€” very convenient and non-destructive.

04

Layer Organization โ€” Layers Panel Tips

When working on a PSD file with many layers, group them using Ctrl+G and rename each group (TEXT, PHOTOS, BACKGROUND, etc.). This keeps your file organized and makes it easy for clients to edit their own details. A well-organized PSD saves time and avoids confusion.

05

How to Install Tamil Fonts

To install Tamil fonts on Windows: right-click the font file โ†’ Install. Commonly used Tamil fonts include Latha (Windows built-in), TAU Valluvar, Bamini, and TSCII fonts. Restart Photoshop after installing to see the new fonts. For modern designs, Unicode Tamil fonts like Noto Sans Tamil are the best choice.

06

Bleed Marks for Printing

For offset and visiting card printing, you need a 3mm bleed. Add an extra 6mm to both the width and height of your canvas. Extend background colors or images to the bleed area. When the printer cuts along the line, there will be no white border โ€” your design will look professional edge to edge.

07

Outline Text Before Sending to Printer

Before sending your design to the printer, outline all text layers: Type โ†’ Convert to Shape. If the printer's computer doesn't have the same fonts installed, the text will change. Alternatively, when saving as PDF, enable the "Embed Fonts" option to preserve your typography exactly.

08

Drop Shadow vs Outer Glow โ€” When to Use Each

Use Drop Shadow to make text visible against low-contrast backgrounds (Layer Styles โ†’ Drop Shadow). If you have dark text on a light background, shadow is usually unnecessary. For political banners, adding a dark drop shadow to white text greatly improves readability. Use Outer Glow only for glow effects.

09

Essential Photoshop Shortcut Keys

Ctrl+Z (Undo), Ctrl+Alt+Z (Multiple Undo), Ctrl+T (Free Transform), V (Move Tool), Ctrl+D (Deselect), Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E (Merge all layers to new layer), Ctrl+S (Save), Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S (Save for Web). Mastering these shortcuts can double your design speed.

How to Remove Photo Backgrounds in Photoshop

To remove a background from a customer photo: go to Select โ†’ Subject (AI automatic selection), then refine edges in Select and Mask. For complex photos like wedding images, use the Pen Tool for a precise selection. Add a Layer Mask to hide the background โ€” this is non-destructive editing so you can always undo.

11

Color Harmony for Beautiful Designs

Use a maximum of 3 colors in any single design. Use Adobe Color (color.adobe.com) to pick complementary or analogous color schemes. For political banners, stick to the party's official colors. White space (negative space) makes designs breathable โ€” too many colors creates a cluttered, amateurish look.

12

Export Settings for Different Purposes

For flex printing: File โ†’ Save As โ†’ JPEG, Quality 10โ€“12, CMYK. For offset printing: use PDF/X-1a format. For screen/digital use: Export โ†’ Export As โ†’ PNG (transparent background) or JPG (white background). For WhatsApp and social media: 1080ร—1080px, RGB, 72 DPI, JPG at 80+ quality.

Complete Guide: Flex Banner Design Step by Step

How to Create a Flex Banner โ€” Step by Step

Flex banner design is one of the most common graphic design tasks for designers in Tamil Nadu. Weddings, political events, shop openings, birthday parties โ€” all require flex banners. Follow these steps to create a professional flex banner.

Step 1: Canvas Setup
Open Photoshop and go to File โ†’ New. Set Width: 4 feet, Height: 3 feet, Resolution: 150 pixels/inch, Color Mode: CMYK. This is the standard size for most flex banners.

Step 2: Background Design
Create a gradient or solid color background using your party or event colors. Add subtle texture overlays to give depth. Keep the background clean so your text and photos stand out clearly.

Step 3: Place Photos
Use File โ†’ Place Embedded to add customer photos as Smart Objects. Resize freely without quality loss. Use the Background Remover tool (available on this site) to remove backgrounds before placing photos.

Step 4: Add Text
Use bold, readable fonts for the main heading. Keep font size large enough to read from a distance. Add a subtle drop shadow to white text to improve readability against bright backgrounds.

Step 5: Export for Print
Go to File โ†’ Save As, choose JPEG format, Quality 12 (Maximum), CMYK color mode. This is the format most flex print shops accept. Always confirm with your printer before submitting.
